Introduction to the Geneva Act & Lisbon system
for the International Registration of Appellations of Origin
and Geographical indications

The Geneva Act entered into force on 26 February 2020. This allows for the international registration of GIs. Contracting parties then agree to protect certain GIs originating in other contracting states, on their own territories. In addition, it gives contracting parties access to the Lisbon System.
The EU became a contracting party to the Geneva Act by Council Decision (EU) 2019/1754. The European Parliament and the European Council adopted Regulation (EU) 2019/1753 setting out the actions to be taken by the Union following its accession.
